Wild Farmlands is operating two long-term projects on Restoration Oaks Ranch, the Gaviota Worm Farm project and the Wild Oak Grasslands Restoration project. Both of these projects are active demonstrations of how the small farm sector can sustainably regenerate ecosystems, reduce or replace synthetic fertilizers, minimize packaging waste, recharge aquifirs and provide food security to regional communities. These projects are accompanied by our Wild Tarantula and Wild Toad Trails nature hikes and other on-farm education activities.
We are passionate about providing a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between regenerative farming, nutritious food and the healthy, sustainable plants, soils and ecosystems we need to manage climate change.
The Challenge of Small, Independent Farms and Ranches
Ignorance, unimaginative government policies and the sophisticated influence of the Global Food System is damaging our local food systems and pushing away an army of capable, passionate stewards of the environment. Since 1992, the state of California alone has been losing more than 500 small independent farmers and ranchers every year. To the detriment of the communities they serve and the ecosystems they sustain, small sector farmers and ranchers are disappearing from the face of the earth.
For the sake of future generations and the earth, we believe that governments worldwide should formally recognize the profound differences between privately owned small farms that primarily serve local communities & sustain healthy ecosystems and large farms that primarily serve the global food system.
Why Are Small Sector Farms, Ranches & Their Food Producing Lands Important?
- CLIMATE CHANGE: The greatest weapons we have against carbon are healthy plants and healthy soils, the domain of farmers and ranchers.You can’t replace small sector farmers and ranchers and the lands they manage with large-scale operations or fallow land and retain the same standard of ecological stewardship. Small sector farmers and ranchers are better equipped to regenerate and sustain healthy crop and ranch lands, strengthen ecosystems, utilize the energy of green waste and reverse climate change than any other group of people in the world.
- FOOD SECURITY: Small sector farms and ranches that naturally serve their local communities first are the only sustainable way to attain and maintain food security. The 2020 Covid-19 pandemic proved that the centralized Global Food System is, by its nature, capable of providing food security. Each region is on its own. You can’t have food security without an established and healthy small farm sector.
- NUTRITION: The centralized Global Food System is directed by CEO's whose primary job is to make money for their ownership & shareholders, not food value. Global Food System regulators focus on pathogens and public safety instead of nutritional value, and food labeling can be misleading. The result is dead or preservatives-laden food on the grocery store shelves. Small sector farms & ranches grow fresh food that gets to your stomach quicker, with no preservatives, no additives and no microbe-killing pasturization.
